I have always loved the idea of growing herbs on a window sill and then snipping them off and then adding the fresh herbs to a home cooked meal. It gets so hot here in Arizona, that it can be difficult to grow herbs outside, during specific times during the year. Urban Farmer offers an Indoor Herb Kit that is only $19.99 and comes with your choice of three different herbs to grow. You can pick from the following varieties: Italian Basil, Lemon Basil, Chives, Cilantro, Oregano, Italian Parsley and English Thyme. I received an Indoor Herb Kit that came with everything that I needed to get started and the herbs that were included with my kit are: Italian Parsley, Basil and Chives.

The Indoor Herb Kit comes with 3 packets of seeds, 3 pots and trays, wooden markers, 6 soil pellets and instruction guide. I love that the pots and trays are 100% biodegradable which are environmentally safe and clean. They are made from rice husks and bamboo scraps and come in really pretty colors (mustard yellow, turquoise and lime green).  The entire set up took me only about 10 minutes before everything was potted and ready to grow.

First, you will soak the soil pellets in warm water (until they fully expand) and then you cut away the outer casing and add two pellets of soil to each pot. I added one soil pellet and then added one packet of seeds and then packed in the 2nd soil pellet on top. Place the tray underneath the pot, add a little water and place the pot in a spot that will get some sun. I have a shelf area under my window sill that gets a good amount of filtered sun and thought it would be a great spot to start the growth process. I also used a permanent marker and added the names of the plants on the wooden markers and then stuck them in the pots.

I drizzle a little bit of water on top of the soil only every 3-4 days, just so that each plant gets some water, but, not too much. After about 1 week, the little seeds started to sprout and it has been about 2 weeks now and you can really start to see them growing! My kids and I check in on them every day to see how much they have grown overnight…it’s pretty exciting! I can’t wait until they become big and strong, so that I can move them out to my outdoor garden area and then start the entire process again once I need new herbs.
