The thought of being able to grow veggies, fruits, herbs and mushrooms at my house really excites me. It’s a fun way to teach your kids about growing their own foods and experiencing the process and taste. Back to the Roots is a California based company that allows you to get your own mushroom kit and grow them at home. I have never come across a place that provides you with a kit for growing mushrooms at home, so, this was thrilling!

I had a long talk with my Nana, who actually knew someone back East that grew her own mushroom farm. She told me that mushrooms thrive in humid weather. Unfortunately, we have a very dry heat in Arizona and keep our air conditioners on full blast here in the summer. My Back to the Roots mushroom kit has been taking longer than expected because my home has been drying out my mushroom kit. But, the good news is that I have been seeing the mushrooms starting to sprout (which is exciting). 


Back to the Roots was invented by two guys who heard a professor talking about growing mushrooms from coffee grounds. This idea sparked their interests and they began working on making that concept a reality. Now, you can find the grow your own mushroom kits on their website and in select Whole Food Stores. I highly recommend jumping on their website and watching all their amazing videos…the company story is very inspiring and interesting.


The kit has everything you need to get started growing your own mushrooms from inside your own home. The kit comes with a box with the grow kit, a spray bottle to keep the kit moist and instructions on how to grow the kit. I can’t wait for my kit to “bloom” into full size pearl oyster mushrooms so that we can use them in our meals.

Back to the RoBTTR_Ventures_Alex_Nikhil_2010ots was founded by Alejandro Velez & Nikhil Arora during their last semester at UC Berkeley in 2009. Two months away from graduation, and heading into the corporate world of investment banking & consulting, they came across the idea during a class lecture of being able to potentially grow gourmet mushrooms entirely on recycled coffee grounds. Inspired by the idea of turning waste into wages & fresh, local food, they experimented in Alex’s fraternity kitchen, ultimately growing one test bucket of tasty oyster mushrooms on recycled coffee grounds. With that one bucket, some initial interest from Whole Foods & Chez Panisse and a $5,000 grant from the UC Berkeley Chancellor for social innovation, they decided to forget the corporate route, and instead, become full-time urban mushroom farmers!
Inspired by the idea of producing local, fresh food from what was an urban waste stream, Back to the Roots has since grown to create the Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Garden which lets anyone, across the country, grow their own gourmet mushrooms at home as well!
